C36000 / CuZn39Pb3 — the 100% machinability reference, with about 3% lead to break the chip.

Machinability ratings for every other alloy are expressed against this one. The lead is insoluble and sits as fine globules that fracture the chip at the tool tip, letting a bar-fed lathe run unattended. Drinking-water lead limits have pushed potable fittings towards low-lead and silicon brasses, so the application must be stated at enquiry: C36000 remains correct for industrial and non-potable parts.
